Titanium has a low density (4.54g/cm3), approximately 56% that of steel. If we compare the area of metal sheets of titanium, copper and steel with the same thickness and the same weight, the area of titanium will be twice that of copper and 75% greater than that of steel. This figure is even more interesting if we consider that its mechanical characteristics are comparable to those of a steel alloy. Therefore, titanium has a higher mechanical strength/weight ratio compared with that of any other structural metal.

It is an appreciable and at times determining characteristic for its more efficient and economic use; examples of this are offshore oil rigs in which the titanium pipes supporting the structure reduce the overall weight of the structure, including its anchoring system, by three times.

Thanks to its low specific weight, its elevated mechanical strength at various operating temperatures and its special resistance to corrosion, titanium is widely used in aeronautic engines; though no longer in production, the Blackbird SR-71 military plane currently holds the height and speed record. 90% of its overall weight consists of titanium!
